Due to the architectural evolution of the chateau through different styles and numerous wars over the centuries, Chateau de Biron was eventually obliged to close various rooms to the public for vital renovation work. I was lucky enough to visit most of these rooms before they were closed off, particularly those whose parquet floors and windows and doors were very, very damaged. The spectacular renovations undertaken by specialist “artists” means that the chateau can now be visited fully in all its magnificent splendour.

I particularly fell in love with this chateau right from the beginning. Following the winding, picturesque road up to the castle, it suddenly loomed majestically before me, reminding me of something out of an old history book. Climb a few more steps and, wow, the panoramic view is enough to take your breath away! It is the most beautiful 360° view of valleys, woodland, vineyards and lakes possible! Your best bet: on Thursday evenings in summer, a local farmers market sets up in the castle’s courtyard where you can taste all sorts of local produce.

The thing I loved most was the vastness of this castle, perched on its promontory… Not knowing this corner of the Dordogne, I stumbled across the site one winter morning and the memory of a gigantic castle, rising up through the mist after miles and miles of forest, will stay with me forever.
